ENERGY-EFFICIENT METAL ROOFING
At Custom-Bilt Metals, we make high-quality metal roofing and seamless rain gutter systems that stand test of time. But we also believe a roof can do more than just protect your home from rain and wind. It can also help you keep your house cooler and save energy.
Most of our roofing products are manufactured with Kynar 500® reflective pigments, an innovative reflective technology by PPG Industries called ULTRA-Cool®. As a result, our COOL Roof products reflect up to 70 percent of the sun's energy and save up to 20% on cooling costs. Over time, they can save thousands of dollars in both residential and commercial applications.
On our website, you'll find a wealth of information about our metal roofing and rain gutter systems. This will include our standing seam & wall systems, Vail® Copper and steel shingles, aluminum roofing shakes, copper standing seam, and an assortment of other metal building products.
SAVE ON ALL YOUR FUTURE COOLING BILLS WITH THE LAST ROOF YOUR HOME WILL EVER NEED
Most people begin looking at metal roofs from Custom-Bilt Metals for their architectural design qualities. We offer a distinctive, traditional, clean look in either a standing seam profile or shingles. Either choice is available in more than two dozen colors.
Though the design may draw you in, the practical functionality of our products offers the most compelling reasons to buy. Our Cool Roof products reflect up to 70 percent of the sun's energy and save up to 20 percent on cooling costs. Even darker colors show substantial savings. Over time, that can save you thousands of dollars. And a metal roof from Custom-Bilt Metals will also be the last roof you'll ever need to install on your home. How cool is that?
THE LOOK THAT MAKES SENSE
Metal roofing offers a wide range of design possibilities, each with its own design aesthetic. A standing seam roof offers a clean look with distinctive lines and a traditional architectural feel. Our metal shingles and shakes, depending on the design of a structure and the choice of an assortment of colors, can create either a traditional look or a cutting-edge design. We even offer true copper roofing that will mature and develop a beautiful, natural patina that conveys an old-world elegance.

FIG. B - Cool Roof: Both visible and ultraviolet waves are deflected more efficiently even when darker colors are used. Solar reflectivity, 25% to 71%
TAX CREDITS AND INCENTIVES
SOLAR TAX CREDITS
The federal government has extended and modified residential energy-efficient property credits that can work in your favor. The bill extends the 30% individual tax credit for residential solar electric expenditures through December 31, 2016. It also eliminates the previous residential solar electric tax credit cap of $2,000!
In addition to solar tax credits your FusionSolar project may also qualify for Cool Metal Roof tax credits, state tax credits and incentives. For information on programs in all 50 states, visit the Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy (DSIRE) at www.dsireusa.org.
TAX CREDITS ON ENERGY STAR METAL ROOFS
A federal tax credit for 30 percent of cost, up to $1,500 is now available to Custom-Bilt Metal customers who install many of the Titan Cool Metal Roof colors we offer. Signed into law as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, this tax credit actually lowers your tax bill dollar for dollar (as opposed to a tax deduction, which merely shaves money off your taxable income). Please consult your tax advisor to confirm your eligibility.
The credit applies to qualifying ENERGY STAR® roof products. Many Titan Cool Roof colors from Custom-Bilt Metals qualify for the credit and more colors will be added soon (Custom-Bilt Metals’ products are shown on pages 43-44 of the ENERGY STAR® Roof Products List).
To qualify for a federal tax credit, a roof must be expected to last 5 years OR have a 2-year warranty. Because all roofs from Custom-Bilt Metals have a lifetime warranty, any color that qualifies meets this criterion. Installation costs are not included and a Manufacturer's Certification Statement is required. For tax purposes, save your receipt and download our Manufacturer's Certification Statement. Use IRS Tax Form 5695 (version 2009). This form should be available in late 2009 or early 2010 at www.irs.gov.
UTILITY REBATES & THE COOL ROOF RATING COUNCIL
Additional rebates and credits may be available from state governments and your local utility providers. Visit www.dsireusa.org to learn about other incentives available in your state.
To collect rebates and incentives from local utilities, homeowners will need to submit a product number. Custom-Bilt Metals’ Titan Cool Roof product numbers can be found in the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) Rated Products Directory. The directory also displays data on the solar reflectivity and thermal emittance of manufacturers’ products. Custom-Bilt Metals is a Class A Member of the CRRC.
TAX CREDITS FOR HOME BUILDERS
Qualifying home builders may be eligible for a $2,000 tax credit for a new energy-efficient home that achieves 50% energy savings for heating and cooling over the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and supplements. At least 1/5 of the energy savings must come from building envelope improvements.
These tax credits apply to new homes located in the United States whose construction is substantially completed after August 8, 2005 and that are acquired from the eligible contractor for use as a residence from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2009.
To learn more visit www.irs.gov and see IRS Form 8908.
EARN CERTIFICATION POINTS
WITH COOL ROOF
What is LEED?
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.
LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance.
LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
Material Points in LEED
Read below to learn how Custom-Bilt Metals cool metal roofing products can directly contribute toward points in the USGBC’s 2009 LEED® Green Building Rating System (Version 3). For each credit category and eligible point(s) shown below, the language from the 2009 LEED New Construction and Major Renovations Reference Guide is provided as substantiation.
Sustainable Sites
SS Credit 7.2: Heat Island Effect - Roof (1 pt)
Heat islands are defined by LEED as thermal gradient differences between developed and undeveloped areas. In large urban areas, the Heat Island Effect contributes to poor environmental air quality issues, such as smog, that are a health hazard to the general population.
To address the environmental issues the Heat Island Effect has in developed areas, roofing with solar reflectance reduces the surface temperature of a roof, when compared to a roof without solar reflectance. As a result, less heat is emitted from the roof.
A Custom-Bilt Metals cool metal roof has solar reflectance and thermal emittance values that can meet the Solar Reflective Index criteria for this credit.
“Use roofing materials having a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) equal to or greater than the values listed below for a minimum of 75% of the roof surface.”
Roof Type |
Slope |
SRI Value |
Low-Sloped Roof |
≤ 2:12 pitch |
SRI 78 |
Steep-Sloped Roof |
> 2:12 pitch |
SRI 29 |
A roof that meets these criteria directly contributes one point in LEED-NC. Note too that for a roof that covers more than 75% of the roof surface, the SRI criteria can be lowered using a weighted average calculation approved by USGBC.
Materials & Resources
MR Credit 4: Recycled Content (1-2 pt)
The metal manufacturing process involves the extraction and processing of virgin materials. These natural resources are not renewable and overtime place a heavy toll on the environment.
Custom-Bilt Metals’ roofing contains recycled metal content, is 100% recyclable at the end of their useful life, and is very durable material. The properties of Custom-Bilt Metals cool metal roofing products can contribute to this credit with the LEED defined default of 25% post-consumer recycled content.
“Use materials with recycled content1 such that the sum of postconsumer2 recycled content plus 1/2 of the preconsumer3 content constitutes at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project. The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows:”
Recycled Content |
Points |
10% |
1 |
20% |
2 |
“The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value.
1 Recycled content is defined in accordance with the International Organization of Standards document, ISO 14021 — Environmental labels
and declarations — Self-declared environmental claims (Type II environmental labeling).
2 Postconsumer material is defined as waste material generated by households or by commercial, industrial and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product, which can no longer be used for its intended purpose.
3 Preconsumer material is defined as material diverted from the waste stream during the manufacturing process. Reutilization of materials (i.e. rework, regrind or scrap generated in a process and capable of being reclaimed within the same process that generated it) is excluded.”
Energy and Atmosphere
EA Credit 1: Optimize Energy Performance (1-19 pt)
Buildings that lack optimized energy performance contribute to excessive energy use. The resulting economic and environmental impacts can be reduced beyond meeting the LEED prerequisites for the Energy and Atmosphere credit.
Custom-Bilt Metal’s cool metal roof products have superior thermal performance, help to reduce cooling/heating energy use, can contribute toward improving the overall energy performance of a building’s design and can meet new and/or existing cost savings percentages for this credit (EA Credit 1).
“OPTION 1. Whole Building Energy Simulation
Demonstrate a percentage improvement in the proposed building performance rating compared with the baseline building performance rating. Calculate the baseline building performance according to Appendix G of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007 (with errata but without addenda 1) using a computer simulation model for the whole building project. EA Credit 2: On-Site Renewable Energy (1-7 pt)
A high percentage of all electricity in the United States is generated with fossil fuels, which are associated with CO2 and other pollution emissions. By generating on-site renewable energy, emissions can be reduced and mitigate the impact on the environment.
FusionSolar™ from Custom-Bilt Metals is a metal-roof-integrated photovoltaic solar electricity generation system, and it can help contribute to meet minimum requirements for energy cost savings for this credit. FusionSolar can produce 2 watts per square foot of thin film photovoltaic material installed.
“Use on-site renewable energy systems to offset building energy costs. Calculate project performance by expressing the energy produced by the renewable systems as a percentage of the building’s annual energy cost and use the table below to determine the number of points achieved. Use the building annual energy cost calculated in EA Credit 1: Optimize Energy Performance or the U.S. Department of Energy’s Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey database to determine the estimated electricity use.
